NDT: A "Full-Body CT Scan" for the Crankshaft
During forging, heat treatment, and machining, microscopic defects-such as forging laps, heat treatment cracks, and grinding burns-can develop, invisible to the naked eye. Under alternating stresses during engine operation, these defects can gradually propagate, ultimately leading to crankshaft fracture and catastrophic failure. The mission of NDT is to thoroughly detect these "hidden killers" before the crankshaft leaves the factory:
· Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) : For detecting surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials (such as forged steel crankshafts). By magnetizing the crankshaft, leakage magnetic fields form at defect locations, attracting magnetic particles to create visualized indications. Any cracks, seams, or laps are revealed.
· Ultrasonic Testing (UT) : For in-depth detection of internal defects. An ultrasonic transducer transmits sound waves into the crankshaft; echoes reflect when encountering defects. By analyzing echo signals, the location and size of internal porosity, inclusions, or flakes can be precisely determined.
On-Site Shooting: The "Industrial Doctor" Under the Lens
Recently, at Zhejiang Weilin Mechanical's production workshop, the technical team conducted a comprehensive shooting session of the NDT process for a CAT320 crankshaft (corresponding to part number 125 3005). Through high-definition lenses, we can clearly observe:
· Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) – The "Revealing Mirror" for Surface Defects: The crankshaft is fixtured on a dedicated magnetizing unit and magnetized. Simultaneously, a suspension containing fluorescent magnetic particles is evenly sprayed over the crankshaft surface. Under UV light (black light), technicians meticulously inspect every journal, fillet, and crank web. If a crack exists, the magnetic particles accumulate at the defect, forming bright fluorescent lines. Under the lens, technicians focus intently, missing no abnormal indication.
· Ultrasonic Testing (UT) – The "X-Ray Vision" for Internal Defects: At critical areas of the crankshaft (main journals, crankpins, fillet transitions), technicians apply couplant and tightly couple the ultrasonic transducer. On the screen, waveforms bounce in real-time. As the transducer scans a defect-free area, the waveform appears regular; encountering an internal defect, an abnormal reflection peak appears. Based on the peak's position and amplitude, technicians accurately determine the defect's depth and size.
· Recording and Judgment: NDT results for each crankshaft are meticulously recorded. For suspicious signals, technicians perform retesting or use alternative methods for cross-validation. Only crankshafts that pass all NDT inspections proceed to the next process or packaging for shipment.
In the video, a CAT320 crankshaft completes a full suite of NDT inspections. The technician solemnly signs the inspection report, which will accompany the crankshaft to the customer as the ultimate quality endorsement.
